About the U.S. 2.5-Ton 6x6 Cargo Truck
The American motor car industry produced an outstanding number of military vehicles during 5 years of the World War 2. Those were widely used not only by the U.S. troops but also by other allied troops. The U.S. was literally the arsenal of democracies. As the World War 2 was the first modern mobile warfare, logistics was of greater importance than ever. Sometimes, it was even more important to ensure smooth supply lines than to develop better ordnance. Many kinds of vehicle were used for supply operations, and among them, the 2 1/2 ton truck, known as "Jimmy" or "Deuce and a half", was one of the most mass produced vehicles, recording the total production of 810,000. The nickname "Jimmy" was derived because the majority of the total production was done by the GMC firm. The most widely used engine was Type 270 with a displacement of 4,416cc, yielding 104 horsepower. The power was transmitted to the wheels via five-speed transmission. Two types of driving axles were offered to the truck. One is "Banjo type" manufactured by Chevrolet and the other is "Split type" made by Timkin. Apart from the driving axles, many components, such as cabin, cargo body and chassis frame, varied according to the manufacturers and various uses. Variants included the normal steel-body cargo truck, water tanker, gasoline tanker, cargo-dump truck and multi-role type with tipping cargo body. The most popular variant, GMC CCKW-353 with normal cabin and long wheelbase of 164 inch, weighing 4.8 ton, had carrying capacity of 2.42 ton on rough roads and 4 ton on pavement. The maximum speed reached 72km/h. Having the then first class performance like these, the 2 1/2 trucks ran across all the battle fields as a means of transport for the Allied forces and played an important role to bring about the victory of the Allies. After its retirement from the U.S. Army in the early 50`s, they were transferred to all over the world and had a great influence on the progress of today`s military motorcars.

About the Russian Tank Destroyer SU122
When confronted by the Sturmgeschutz II, during the German Blitzkrieg on the Eastern Front, the Russian military quickly began to design their own assault guns. The result was a tank destroyer based on the T-34 chassis, which was armed with a 122mm howitzer. The vehicle was named the SU-122 with the letters "SU" standing for self-propelled and the number "122" representing the 122mm howitzer. Assault guns had some advantages over tanks during the war. Due to lack of a turret, the vehicle could be built with larger more powerful weapons with lower production costs. However, the main disadvantage was the entire vehicle had to be moved to aim at a target. The SU-122 was produced from December 1942 until the summer of 1944. Only 1,150 SU-122 tank destroyers were built during this time. In July 1943, the vehicle was used for the first time in the battle of Kursk. This vehicle set the foundation for the SU-85 and SU-100 tank destroyers.

About the Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf.N
The rugged Panzer kampfwagen III was used in all theaters by the German army in WWII and was well-liked due to its reliability. However, the size limitations of the tank`s chassis meant that armament upgrades were limited and its usefulness as a battle tank diminished as the Allies produced more advanced and powerful tanks. With this realization, the final variant of thePz.kpfw.III, the Ausf.N, was modified into an infantry support tank armed with the short-barreled75mm gun from the Pz.kpfw.IV, which was being upgraded with more powerful guns. Beginning from June 1942, 700 of these Ausf.N variants, also known as Sturmpanzer III, were made and were often assigned to independent Panzer Battalions to protect the heavier Tiger tanks. The5mm Schurzen armor skirt modifications were added from the spring of 1943.

About the German Sd.Kfz.142 Tank
After debuting to great acclaim in our 1/48 MM Series, the popular Sturmgesch`tz III (StuG III) Ausf. B now makes its way to the 1/35 MM Series. With its short barreled cannon and squat, formidable hull shape, the 1/35 StuG III promises to offer boxful of modeling satisfaction.

Germany`s versatile Stug III was originally designed as an assault weapon, however also came to be used as a weapon of defense as the war progressed, providing both assault gun and anti-tank support. Based on the durable Panzer III chassis, the Stug III featured a monoblock structure with an L24 75mm short barreled gun mounted directly to the hull, eliminating the revolving turret and reducing overall height. The Ausf. B was the first truly mass produced Stug III with 250 produced from June 1940. Featuring wide tracks and powered by a 230hp Maybach HL 120 TRM engine the Ausf. B boasted a top speed of 40km/h. The Ausf. B saw action during the Balkans campaign in April 1941 and Operation Barbarossa in June, 1941. The simple construction leading to low costs and easy mass production made the Stug III one of Germany`s most produced armored vehicles with over 10,000 produced during WWII.

Accurate 1/35 scale model of the German Sturmgesch`tz III Ausf. B assault gun.

About the Kampfpanzer LEOPARD Tank
Defeated in World War II, Imperial Germany completely collapsed and its territory was divided into two spheres, liberalist and communists. Then in 1955, West Germany was admitted to the Western European Alliance and the West German Defense Forces was re-established as a new member of the NATO powers.

As West Germany is adjacent to the communist sphere, problems on national defense was much thought of. To defend the border-line an armoured unit was established. The German techniques by which the Tiger, Panther and other excellent tanks were produced was succeeded by this Leopard tank that appeared in 1961 in West Germany. Leopard also has the name of `Standard Panther`. It was prototyped in 1961 and 1962 and was formally adopted by the West German Army in 1963, prior to the adoption of the French A.M.X. 30. In 1964, the West German Army placed an order for 1,400 of this tank and the first tank, mass produced, was delivered by Krauss Moffei in Munich.

The crew of the tank is four and L7A 1 105mm gun made in Britain is used as its main gun which is common to tanks of the NATO forces and has the same destroying power as that of the British Centurion, U.S.A. M60 and Swiss Pz 61. Its shooting sight is based on a range finder system and it can shoot a target at a distance of 1,000 meters even at night by simultaneous use of infrared rays. Its engine is a water-cooled, 10 cylinder multi-fuel engine by Mercedes Benz.

The maximum high speed is 65km/h. Not only diesel oil but also gasoline and fuel for jet engines can be used. Its chassis and body is water-tight so that it can cross rivers at a depth of 4 meters underwater. Thus, this tank is a modern excellent maneuverability tank of which importance is attached.

About the German STEYR Type 1500A/01
The German successes at the beginning of WWII were known as "Blitzkriegs", and demonstrated not only the effectiveness of the mechanization but also the importance of military transport vehicles. They planned to produce the military vehicles including the motorcycles under the general command for motor vehicle in 1940. It was called "Schell Programme", standardized and improved the productivity of the vehicles. For example, the types of trucks were reduced to approximately one third this time. The standardization was based on the weight of the vehicles manufactured in the market. It was divided into 5 different types: 1, 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6.4 ton. The Steyr Type 1500 A/01 manufactured in Austria was one of the 1.5 ton types. It had a front suspension system consisting of transverse leaf springs, torsion bars and track rod, the rear suspension system with leaf springs and torsion bars that were matched to the German military vehicles. The distinctive features were the front guard and the rounded engine hood. The Steyr 3.5 liter V8 air-cooled engine produced 85 HP, sustaining the top speed of 100 km/h. The transmission was based on 4 speed forward and 1 reverse on the four-wheel-drive. There were some models which differed in the locations of the spare wheels according to the production period. It was preferred by the officers because of a variety of usage such as a staff car in line, a tow car and an ambulance.

About the MARDER 1A2 Tank Model
The highly successful and sophisticated German Marder entered active service in the early 1970`s. It was designed under a concept that departed from previous armored personnel carriers, in that it is capable of offensive and defensive combat operations. It provides good protection to its load of infantrymen from small arms fire, and fallout from a tactical nuclear attack. Designed and developed by the Rheinstahl Henschel AG of Kassel, renowed for their formidable Tiger tanks of WWII, the Marder became such a distinctive armored vehicle, it was classed as a new category, and called the "MICV" or Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle with NATO forces. The development of the Marder dated back to the early 1960`s when the first prototypes were built for evaluation. These closely resembled in appearance the HS30, then in service, and having a forward mounted turret. However the powerplant was moved to a right-side midship allowing a rear exit format for the infantrymen. Further improvements and a redesign made radical changes and repositioned the powerplant to the right forward section. The last prototypes offered in the mid 1960`s showed a sleek and sloped front section that provides excellent protection. It is powered by a Mercedes-Benz 6-cylinder diesel engine capable of 600h- that allows a maximum road speed of 75km/h. The Marder 1A2 is an upgraded version that features a "Milan" anti-tank missile system. The Marder, with 20 years in service, is continually being improved to meet the needs of NATO`s long-term strategy.

About the NISSAN SKYLINE V-spec R34
From 1969 through the early 1970`s, at the Japanese Touring Car Race, the Skyline GT-R achieved an unbelievable streak of fifty victories in a row. Sixteen years later, its successful name was passed on to the R32 type, which was developed as a base machine for Group-A races. To take full advantage of its powerful 2.6l, 6-cylinder, twin turbo engine, it was equipped with a 4-WD system, which provided unrivaled race performance. 1995 saw the larger body and refined mechanics of the R33.

In 1999, the technology cultivated over a long racing history was unsparingly poured into the new R34 type, developed with "ultimate driving pleasure" in mind. The R34 features a smaller body and a sturdier structure, with ample consideration given to its aerodynamics. The adjustable two-level rear spoiler as well as a front and rear diffuser (V-spec), regulate the flow of air under the chassis, heightening control. The R34`s impressive speed is accounted for by a modification in valve timing and turbo-charging of the GETRAG 6-speed transmission controlled engine.

Further refinements have been adopted such as an electronically controlled front/rear power distribution 4WD system and a multi-link suspension. Undergoing extensive testing in Japan, its driving performance was further improved in Germany, on the Nurburgring. Unrivaled speed and control have made the R34 version of the GT-R Nissan`s, if not Japan`s, new index of quality.

About the Ferrari F310B Sport Car
Team Ferrari, of automotive racing fame, was founded by Enzo Ferrari, and made their Grand Prix racing debut in 1948. Since then, they have established a reputation for creating advanced racing machines that often became benchmarks for Grand Prix racing. The team entered the 1997 Formula One Championship season with their highly sophisticated, F301B racing machine. Although the Ferrari F310B has appelative resemblance to the F310 car raced by the team during the 1996 season, it has been modified very substantially. Directed by talented designer John Barnard, the monocoque construction was totally renewed and the aerodynamic package was redesigned through extensive wind tunnel testing to obtain the best stability with raised nose design. To ensure reliability, the transversely mounted gearbox and the rear suspension used on the F310 was retained. The V-10 cylinder 2,998.1cm cubed powerplant, called 046/2, was an evolution of last year`s engine, 046/1. While maintaining reliability, the driveability and performance was improved and it was said to yield ten horsepower more than the previous version. The front and rear suspension used independent push-rod activated torsion springs to obtain optimum handling at the track. With talented drivers Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine at the wheel, the Ferrari F310B fully displayed its outstanding performance to the world`s Ferrari fans throughout the season.

About the GREYHOUND U.S.M8 Armored Car
The M8 Greyhound was used during World War II primarily as an escort and reconnaissance vehicle. The 6 wheeled vehicle`s light weight made it a maneuverable vehicle. Development of the M8 began in 1941, and it was originally planned for armor support, but was later shifted to reconnaissance. The Ford company developed a prototype in June, 1942. The Greyhound had a Hercules JXD rear mounted, water cooled engine, capable of generating 110 HP at 3000 r.p.m. The transmission had a 4 speed forward, 1 speed reverse gearbox. The six wheel configuration and engine made the Greyhound a stable vehicle with a maximum speed of 88.5 km/h and range of 563 km. The steel plated armor on the body ranged from 19mm to 32mm thick, the open topped turret had 19mm thick armor. The 12.7mm M2 machine gun was added to the cuppola. The Greyhound was also equipped with an M70D gun sight/telescope. The interior could store up to 80 rounds for the M6, 400 rounds for the 12.7mm machine gun and sometimes 1500 rounds for the 7.62mm machine gun. From March, 1943 to April 1945, over 8523 M8s were produced. They were mainly used in Europe, but they also served in the Pacific. The M8 was supplied to the Allies, including Britain and France. It is the British who nicknamed the M8 "Greyhound". Many countries would continue to use the M8 well after this conflict.

About the FLAKPANZER IV WIRBELWIND
In the latter half of the Second World War, Germany`s loss of air supremacy created a pressing need for the development of powerful anti-aircraft vehicles to combat the fighter-bombers of the Allies. At first, the focus of production was around the Mobelwagen anti-aircraft vehicle. It was built on the chassis of the Panzer IV tank, and equipped with a single 37mm Flak gun, which was protected on all sides by light armored plates. In the spring of 1944, a new standard was laid down to unify the production of a new anti-aircraft vehicle. The plan included the following: 1) rotating armored turret capable of holding three of four crewmen, 2) guns with effective firing range of 2000m, 3) integrated mount of at least two guns, 4) space for ample ammuntion, 5) body of under 3m in height, and 6) various wireless devices. These criteria resulted in the Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind was its exceptional rotating turret protected by no less than eighteen, 16mm thick armored plates. The open-top turret provide just enough space for the gunner and two loaders to operate effectively. The Wirbelwind could carry 3200 rounds of ammunition for its four 20mm Flak guns, which fired at an angle of elevation of 90, an angle of depression of 10 and a speed of 800 shots/min. The Wirvelwind became the scourge of any plane that flew too low.

About the GULASCHKANONE Field Kitchen
The `Tross` or train of a company or battery in the Wehrmacht was composed of three groups, the combat train, the baggage train and the ration train. The latter was equipped with a field kitchen for the company and suitable transport for the rations. The actual type of field kitchen and ration vehicle (or vehicles) depended on the type of unit - horse - or truck-drawn - in an ordinary infantry division, but sometimes completely truckdrawn in a panzer division or other types of machanised division. Within a division, ration supply was organised through a distributing point, and distribution to the ration trains within the division was made daily at this point, iperational commitments permitting. Within the company each man carried in his pack or bread bag one day`s rations, and one further day`s rations was carried in the unit field kitchen, with a further two day`s rations in the supply transport of the unit. Afurther supply of one day`s rations was carried in the divisional supply columns. The supply problem was formidable when it is considered that to supply daily rations for each man in a typical division there was a requirement for 12 tons of bread, 2.88 tons of meat, 2.88 tons of peas, and 1.92 tons of wurst (sausage), plus proportionate quantities of coffee, sugar, butter and salt. A typical field kitchen was horse-drawn behind a two man limber and had cart wheels. There were several varying patterns of field kitchen and alternative pneumatic-tyred wheels could be fitted if the kitchen was drawn by a truck.

About the French Armored Carrier UE
Always looking for interesting subjects to add to our world-famous 1/35 scale Military Miniatures lineup, we now proudly announce the release of the unique French Armored Carrier UE. Display it with the B1 bis (ITEM 35282) to create an exhibit of early WWII French AFVs.

Originally developed in the early 1930s, this light armored carrier was capable of towing light artillery and was also designed for use in supplying infantry units at the front lines. Its compact design meant that the heads of the two crew members protruded from the chassis, so distinctive semi-spherical hatches were created to give them a little protection. The initial production of 60 vehicles was soon supplemented by larger orders as France sought to re-equip its army to face the growing threat of Germany. By 1940, approximately 4,800 had been built, including an improved version featuring 4-step gearbox and towing shackles. It was used in the early days of WWII by the French army until its surrender, after which the German army used captured vehicles until the end of the war, modifying some of them into self-propelled guns.

Features
High-quality 1/35 scale assembly kit model of the Armored Carrier UE.

Headlight and tow hook parts included to depict UE Series 2 and Series 3 variants.

Fine details such as movable cargo compartment (planned), semi-spherical hatches, and towed trailer all accurately reproduced.

Full set of accessories, such as 6 wooden crates, 2 fuel drums, 2 each of both large and small canvas bundles, are included for realistic depiction of cargo loads.

2 crew member torso figures and 2 new French soldier figures with MAS36 rifles in standing poses included for increased diorama possibilities.

3 different types of markings planned.

About the German Panzerkampfwagen
After WWI, Germany pushed forward the development of battle tanks under a blanket of secrecy. The Panzerkampfwagen II used the Panzerkampfwagen I`s hull and came armed with a 2cm main gun. Mass production of the Ausf.A began in 1937 and various improvements including a new suspension led to the Ausf.C. Until the end of production in April 1940, 1088 Panzer II tanks were manufactured. They led the surprise invasion on Poland and were the main tanks used in the attack on France. Later, they were successfully used in reconnaissance missions until the end of the war.

About the Russian Tank BT-7 Model
In 1935, the last of the Soviet cavalry tanks, the BT-7, were produced. This Russian tank incorporated features from tanks designed by the American engineer, Walter Christie. The "BT" in the name stands for "Bystrokhodny Tank" which means fast tank. The coil spring suspension system, which was designed by Walter Christie, and powerful engine allowed this tank to reach an on-road speed of 31mph. To enhance speed and mobility, the tracks could be removed so that the vehicle would operate on-road with only the wheels. The BT-7 featured a 47mm gun, 7.62mm DT machine gun, sloped frontal armor, and a Model M-17T (V-2 at BT-7m engine. The sloped armor was used in later tanks such as the T-34l. An estimated 4,700 BT-7 tanks were produced from 1935 to 1939. The tanks were used during the Spanish Civil War, in battles against the Japanese forces in Mongolia and on the Eastern Fronts.

The large-pitch simple tracks are reproduced as link-type assembly tracks which include one-piece straight sections. Suspension features a realistic finish.

Headlight lens and vision guard on the driver`s hatch are made from clear parts to enhance realism.

About the German STEYR Type 1500A/01
After WWI, the German military discovered the importance of combined land and air assaults to maximize the damage of the enemy`s forces. This strategy, known as the "Blitzkrieg" strategy, amplified the need for reliable transport vehicles. The "Schell Programme" was introduced, in 1940, to increase the ease of production of land vehicles for the German Army. The Austrian-made, 1.5ton, all wheel drive, Steyr 1500A/01 was an 8 passenger vehicle used in a variety of roles such as staff car, HQ transport, artillery tow truck and ambulance. The vehicle was equipped with a front torsion bar, lead spring rear suspension, four speed transmission, air-cooled 8-cylinder 85hp engine, and had a top speed of 100km/h. Towards the end of WWII, some of the vehicles were produced with bulletproof windows, and reinforced steel plate doors.

About the KOMMANDEUR-WAGEN Type 1500A
In the early half of World War II, the mechanized units of the German army recorded many victories by employing the "Blitzkrieg" strategy. These triumphs can be attributed to both the fighting units on the front lines and the clever strategies and know-how of the commanders. To move these high ranking commanders from place to place, various vehicles were necessary. One of those vehicles was the Kommandeurwagen, produced by the Austrian firm, Steyr. Its development was based on the military transport vehicle, Steyr 1500A/01, produced in accordance with the vehicle standardization "Schell Programme" of 1940. Developed using the chassis of a 1500A truck, the 1500A/01 housed an eight cylinder, eighty-five horse power gasoline engine, a four forward/one reverse gear transmission, a front wheel torsion bar, and a leaf spring rear suspension. The Wehrmacht, impressed with the maximum speed of 100km/h on paved roads and excellent running performance, ordered the Steyr firm to produce a modified version for command use. In contrast to the eight passenger capacity of the 1500A/01, the Steyr Kommandeurwagen, which was designed for comfort, had a capacity of only five passengers. All of the seats were leather and the fight front seat could be reclined and used as a bed. The Kommandeurwagen`s role as the wheels for the "elite" of the German army stretched from Russia to North Africa.

About the German Destroyer MARDER III
In the summer of 1941, Germany`s invasion of Russia was unfolding favorably for the Wehrmacht. However, German authorities began to notice the inferiority of their tanks and anti-tank weaponry to those of the Soviet army, such as the T34. To cope with this disparity they decided to: improve the Pz.Kpfw.III and Pz.Kpfw.IV tanks; develop new tanks; and increase production of the 7.5cm anti-tank cannon. Finally, as an interim solution, it was decided to improved captured Russian 7.62cm anti-tank cannons and deploy them for Wehrmacht use. These fearsome cannons could penetrate 83mm armor plating at a range of 1000m, but after improvement, could penetrate up to 122mm, and were renamed 7.62cm Pak36(r) gun. Until the new tanks were ready for deployment, 7.62cm Pak36(r) guns were to be mounted on the chassis of obsolete Pz.Kpfw.II and Pz.Kpfw.38(t) tanks for the creation of a stopgap tank hunter. The 38(t) tanks were based on the LtVz.38 tank, which was developed for use by the Czech company CKD (later BMM) for the Czech army in 1938. In 1939, with the annexation of Czechoslovakia, this tank went into production for the Wehrmacht. The base this Czech-made tank was combined with the Soviet 7.62cm Pak36(r) gun, resulting in the creation the Wehrmacht`s fearsome tank hunter, the Marder III Sd.Kfz.139. The turret base of the Pk.Kpfw.38(t) was removed and a 16mm steel plate was attached in its place. The Soviet 7.62cm Pak36(r) gun was mounted on that plate, 11mm armor plating installed to the front and sides, and massive stirrups immobilized the gun.

About the HORCH 4x4 TYPE1a KRAFT-WAGEN
As the Reichswehr of the 1920`s was very much limited both in size and scope by the terms of the Versailles Treaty, and as the economic situation did not, in any case, allow lavish spending on equipment, most of the transport needs of the army were met by using adapted commercial vehicles. Most widely used of all vehicle types, because they were cheap and very mobile, were personnel carriers based on commercial car chassis fitted with a simple open body of the type known as the Kubelsitzer (literally "bucket-seater"). This type of vehicle, as the name implies, consisted of little more than the chassis and normal front end, as in the normal motor car, with sturdy metal backed seats secured to the chassis frames. Folding canvas screens took the place of doors, and there was a canvas cover, as in a sports car, to be erected in foul weather. Though cross-country performance was very limited, the style of the vehicle was something of a trend setter and small utility personnel carriers have since become common equipment in all armies.

To improve on cross country ability, these early "Kubelwagens" had large section tyres, strengthened springs, and lower axle ratios than their commercial equivalents. During the 1930`s, this type of vehicle saw ever wider use with the German army and was one of its most characteristic and distinctive types. These "Kubelwagens" were used as light gun tractors, staff cars, radio cars, command cars, artillery survey vehicles, and signal line layers, as well as serving as personnel carriers for motorized units. Trials held in 1930 had established that the car chassis made by Daimler-Benz, Adler and Wanderer were the best, and these makes predominated in service.

From 1933, when the National Socialist took power and began overt re-armament of the German forces, there was an expansion on an increasing scale with mechanisation of the greatly enlaged army among priority schemes. At that time the various cars on adapted commercial chassis were categorised as follows: Leichte Personnenkraftwagen (light passenger car) approved makeup to 1500cc engine capacity. Mittlerer Personenkraftwagen (medium passenger car) approved make up to 3,000cc engine capacity. Schwerer Personenkraftwagen (heavy passenger car) approved make up to 3,000cc engine capacity.

The light passenger car types were each given a designation according to their intended purpose. Thus Kfz (kraftfahrzeug) 1 was the designation for the basic light personnel carrier; Kfz 2 designated a light signals car (Kraftkahrzeug motor vehicle). The medium vehicles were designated similaryly from Kfz 11 upwards according to function. In the heavy class only the Kfz 21 heavy cross country personnel carrier was produced, as this was the last type to be approved and ordered. It entered service in 1937 and was based on the Auto-Union/Horch EFm chassis, remaining in production until 1940 (after Austria was annexed, the Steyr 1500A was also built to this "heavy" requirement, however also designated Kfz 21). The Auto-Union/Horch EFm model had a V-8 80 hp engine and four wheel drive. Because of its length it had three rows of two seats, seating six men in all. Spare wheels were carried on the side panels flanking the first and second rows of seats. The ordinary commercial tourer car on which the military "kubelwagen" a senior officer`s staff car. The Kfz 21 was described in German as the "Schwerer gelandegangiger personenkraftwagen (6-sitzer)" heavy cross country passenger car (6 seater). It had the normal sort of open Kubelsitzer body and a folding canvas top. Overall length was 15 ft 11 inches.

The `Einheits` Programme
One of the problems presented by the original policy of purchasing commercially based vehicles was the vast diversity of makes taken on to the inventory, and the associated maintenance and spares supply problem. Different makes of engine, transmission, chassis, and so on meant that the stock of spares needed was immense. Thus, once the big armament programme got under way, it was decided in 1934 to replace the range of commercially based chassis with a new range of standardised chassis types. It was intended that the three classes of field car, light, medium, and heavy, would have many parts in common, including suspension units, and that the light and heavy cars would have steerable wheels at the front and back, and would have four wheel drive. This proved to be too ambitious an ideal, even from the start, for the cost and time factor involved in developing such a sophisticated series of vehicles was immense. Only the early vehicles had rear wheel steering, and this requirement was dropped in 1940 to simplify production. Auto-Union/Horch were the main builders of both the medium and heavy passenger cars in the Einheits programme (einheitsfahrgestell: standard motor chassis). The Auto Union/Horch Chassis I for heavy passenger cars (schwerer personenkraftwagen)was produced in 1935. As part of the overall plan it was intended to use this chassis with a rear mounted engine for armoured cars and with a front mounted engine for passenger cars. The original chassis with steerable wheels front and back was designated I a, and the later production chassis (from 1939-40) was designated I b. The chassis featured four wheel drive. There was a torque converter with a limited differential action to prevent winding up in the transmission. The front axle was driven directly from the main gearbox, which included a third differential. There were five forward gear ratios, one reverse, and an auxiliary low gear for cross country work. There was a self locking differential on the rear axle with a normal differential at the front, this arrangement ensuring that all wheels received driving power no matter what the nature of the terrain. There was fully independent suspension, each wheel having two radius arms sprung by two coil springs between the power radius arm and a bracket on the chassis frmae. Shock absorbers were incorporated into the suspension to prevent damage to the steering arms. The four wheel steering facilty proved to be unsatisfactory in the long term. The rear wheel steering was optional, controlled by a dog clutch operated by a lever from the driving position. Using four wheel steering and driving fast, the vehicle was found to slew sideways; thus it was not popular and after some experience four wheel steering was forbidden altogether at speeds over 13 mph. This limitation made the whole facility of such slight value that it was dropeed entirely from the 1940 onward production chassis.

Field car production with tis chassis started late in 1938. Externally all Auto-Union/Horch heavy cars looked alike irrespective of actual chassis model, however. By 1940 the chassis had been simplified considerably, and the Berlin Ford factory was also by then engaged in production. Ford built vehicles had a Ford 3.6 litre V-8 78 hp engine in place of the Horch unit. The late 1940 models lacked recesses in the body and chassis mounted support arms for spare wheels. Production ceased in 1941 in favour of a new scheme under the Schell-Programm which sought to rationalise car production completely. In this scheme the heavy car shared the chassis of the 1.5 ton light truck. Auto-Union/Horch heavy cars remained in service throughout World War 2, however, and were among the most common of German vehicles on every front. The Auto-Union/Horch on the heavy passenger car chassis was used in several roles, and though the layout of the open body followed the old Kubelsitzer idea, all but the very earliest had the added refinement of metal side doors rather than canvas side screens. The following were among the types based on this chassis: Fernsprechkraftwagen (Kfz 23) Telephone Truck. Leichter Scheinwerferkraftwagen I (Kfz 83) Light Searchlight Truck I Leichter Scheinwerferkraftwagen II (Kfz 83) Light Searchlight Truck II Protzkraftwagen (Kfz 59: Limber (or towing) Vehicle for Light Guns. Mannschaftskraftwagen (Kfz 81): Light AA Vehicle (some with 2 cm Flak Gun mounted) All the above had the open body but differed in function and, in some cased, internal stowage and equipment. In addition, the following were built on the chassis: Sanitaetskraftwagen (Kfz 31): Ambulance Verstarkerfraftwagen (Kfz 24): Maintenance Truck Both of these had a closed van type body.

About the British CENTAUR C.S.Mk.IV
Britain`s main cruiser tank in the latter half of WWII was the Cromwell. Due to a production shortage of Meteor engines, the Liberty Engine was used instead and the vehicle was renamed the Centaur Cruiser Tank. Among the various types of Centaurs, the 95mm tank howitzer equipped Mk.IV close support tank was the only version to enter actual combat. In the Normandy Invasion of June, 1944, the Centaurs were deployed to the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group, where they fired at German pill-boxes from landing vessels. After the landing, the Centaurs continued to offer fire support for infantry and served a key role in securing the beachhead.
