About the German 8T Half Track Sdkfz 7/1
Recognising the excellent tractive force and cross-country ability of half tracks, the German Army Ordnance Bureau decided in 1932 to develop six military half tracks, from a 1-ton to a large 18-ton tractor. Different car makers were ordered to develop one of these.

Krauss-Maffeir in Munich took charge of an 8-ton half tracks. Because this firm had given attention and study to half tracks since 1928, they completed a prototype, named KMm7 as early as 1933. It soon developed into the KMm8 and KMm9, and in 1936 the KMm10 was put into production. It was not until the KMm10 was born that the 8-ton half track was officially designated "Medium 8-ton Tractor (Sd.Kfz-7). The last production model, KMm11 was completed in 1938 and put into production immediately.

The production of the 8-ton half track totalled about 1,200 in number by the end of World War II. One of these models was the 8-ton half track with 20mm four-barrelled AA machine gun (Sd.kfz 7/1).

About the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I
The Supermarine Spitfire is regarded by many as the most esthetically designed single seat fighter to appear during the Second World War. It was conceived by the brilliant British designer Reginald J. Mitchell, and first flew on 5 March 1936. It was an advanced, low wing single seat monoplane with a very smooth flush riveted metal skin and a long flowing front cowling. Using the famous RollsRoyce "Merlin` liquid cooled 12 cylinder engine that produced more than 1,000 horsepower, the Mk I Spitfire attained a top speed of 586km/h. The very distinctive elliptical shaped wing was useful in reducing parasitic drag and allowed a fairly thin wing construction. It carried a large coolant radiator under the starboard wing, and a small oil cooler under the port wing, giving it an asymmetrical appearance when viewed from the front and bottom. The retractable main landing gear also contributed to its smooth lines, and gave it higher performance. The Mk I Spitfire was armed with eight 7.7mm machine guns, four to each wing. The early production of Mk I Spitfires used a fixed pitch wooden two blade propeller, which was later replaced with a two-pitch wooden two blade propeller. The Spitfire`s combat action in thwarting Germany`s attempt to raid the English mainland during 1940, and known as the "Battle of Britain" has ensured this fighter`s pride of place in the minds of England`s men and women forever.

About the U.S. M2 Bradley IFV
Mechanization of ground forces first came about during the 1st World War with the introduction of an armoured tracked vehicle fielding a large bore cannon, by England. This vehicle was dubbed "Tank" by Winston Churchill, and the innovation has altered the conduct of warfare to this day. During the second conflict, the mechanization of Infantry was perfected by the Germans and brought about the name Blitzkrieg. During that conflict over 3 million military vehicles were produced, and even thought the tank had considerable advantages, the need for a method of having the Infantry keep pace with them became a necessity.

After the war, many countries modified existing armoured personnel carriers for modern usage. The M113, which was first fielded in 1964, was a low budget, trouble free masterpiece and widely used throughout the globe. The United States needed a "fight from within" mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle and research started in 1967 for a vehicle to meet this purpose. With the greater speed and mobility of the M1 Abrams MBT new requirements were levied that the IFV and CFV must be able to keep up and support the MBT`s. The FMC Corporation of San Jose, Califoria won the bidding competition and the M2/3`s came into being. Dubbed the Bradley in honor of Omar N. Bradley, a five star general of World War 2 fame, the M2/3 series offer the sought after flexibility in a true "fight from within" concept.

The M2 Infantry Fighting Vehicle differs from the M3 in the addition of six external firing ports to handle the M231 FPW`s which can be operated by the six, fully equipped infantrymen carried within. Manned by a crew of three, the M2 IFV mounts a Hughes 25mm M242 chain-gun and a coaxially mounted 7.62 machine gun, housed in an offset turret which can traverse 360 degrees. With a maximum elevation angle of 60 degrees, the cannon provides aircraft and helicopter protection. A thermic ray visioning fire control system allows accurate firing even when traversing rough field conditions, day or night. A TOW anti-tank missile system also complements the defensive capabilities of the Bradley. With a speed of 66km/h on road capability, the M2 IFV is truely a formidable weapons system.

This tank has been in use for a long time as the main tank of the J.G.S.D.F. It features modernized equipment and has been recreated in high detail.

About the JGSDF Type 61 Tank
Since being officially adopted by Japan`s Ground Self Defense Force in 1961, the Type 61 tank has been in continuous service for more than 30 years. Although destined to be replaced by the sophisticated Type 74 and the newly introduced Type 90 tanks, it is still considered by many as the center piece of the Japanese Self Defense Forces. Designed from the outset to carry a 90mm main gun, the tank also had to be able to traverse the narrow railways throughout Japan. The result was a very compact medium tank, with a low profile that is only 2.96m wide and 2.46m high, and weighing 35 tons. Its 90mm gun was produced by the Japan Steel Works, Ltd., using the renowned U.S. type M3A1 gun as a pattern. The gun is mounted in a cast steel turret, and elevated either manually or by hydraulic pressure. Loading is manual and capable of firing 15 rounds per minute. Auxiliary armament is a 12.7mm M2 machine gun mounted on the commander`s cupola, and a 7.62mm M1919A4 machine gun mounted co-axially with the main gun. Powerplant is a Mitsubishi Type 12HM21WT, air cooled V-12 cylinder, diesel engine, capable of 570 horsepowers which provides a top-speed of approximately 45km/h. A torsion-bar suspension system was utilized and is matched to the single-pin caterpillar tracks. Minor improvements, such as smoke discharging units, were added to keep this venerable armored vehicle in the front lines of Japan`s self defense operations.

Introductions
The 88mm Flak 36 Gun was powerful enough to penetrate the armor of Allied tanks such as the Matilda, leading to its effective use as an anti-tank weapon in North Africa. Tamiya`s legendary flagship 1/35 scale model returns with newly designed figures in tropical Africa Corps uniforms. This kit is great for building dioramas involving Rommel`s men in the North African campaign.

About the German 88mm Gun Flak 36 - North African Campaign
Flak 36 anti-aircraft guns made their notorious debut in an anti-tank role at Halfaya during the Battle of Sollum (Operation Battleaxe), June 1941. Firing from concealed positions at short range, they destroyed 123 out of 238 attacking British tanks. The Germans claimed one British tank for every 20 "88" rounds fired at Halfaya. Flak 36 guns serving in Africa performed in both anti-armor and anti-air roles, and were indeed the ace-in-the-hole of the Africa Corps.

About the German 18T Heavy Half Track - FAMO
When a tank became inoperative, the Recovery Platoons were informed of the condition of both the tank and the surrounding road surface. Tanks such as Pz.Kpfw.III and Pz.Kpfw.IV could be towed by a single 18 ton heavy half-track, but heavy tanks such as the Tiger I or Panther required three or more towing vehicles. In that case, about 5m of wire rope was used to link each of the half-tracks together. Except for emergency situations, a draw-bar was used for the tank/half-track linkage instead of wire rope. After the linkage was complete, a commander and signalman boarded the lead half-track, directing the other half-tracks by a series of hand signals. (1/35 scale scene at left measures about 1m 20cm in length)

The Largest Half-Track in the German Army

Detailed information on the finished FAMO is presented one month after the initial report of the mock-up. The FAMO was the largest half-track in the German army, and the model reflects the size and detail of this behemoth. Combine with the Panzer III, IV, Tiger I and Panther for a variety of diorama possibilities.

In the wake of Blitzkrieg advances made by the Wehrmacht at the outbreak of WWII, the recovery of damaged or broken tanks from the battlefield proved relatively simple. After securing an area, reinforcing divisions could easily send inoperative vehicles back to the homeland for repair via railway. However, in the seesaw battles with the British Army in North Africa and against the Russian Army on the Russian front, the quick replenishment of tank strength became an indispensable element of Wehrmacht battle strategy. The utilization of the 18 ton Heavy Half-Track "Famo" proved fundamental to this strategy.

The proposal for the development of the Wehrmacht half-tracks was first made in 1932. Originally, three half-tracks, designated by their towing capability (5 ton, 8 ton and 12 ton) were designed, until 1936, when a light 3 ton vehicle and a heavy 18 ton vehicle, the largest one in the Wehrmacht, were also added. The 18 ton half track was mainly developed for the towing of 21cm and 24cm artillery howitzer and of course for tank recovery. It could also be used for the transport of over 30 troops.

About the German Sturmgeschutz III Ausf.G Early Version
Originally intended for infantry support duties, Germany`s Sturmgeschutz (assault gun) and abbreviated "StuG" III first appeared in combat during 1940. It had the durable Panzer III chassis with a completely new superstructure. To keep the vehicles profile as low as possible, the revolving turret was eliminated and the short barreled 75mm L/24 gun was mounted directly onto the hull. As it was mainly intended for close fire support for the Wehrmacht, it was used as self-propelled artillery against the opposing enemy`s strategic points. However, when the German forces encountered the Russian KV and T-34 tanks on the Eastern front, the situation abruptly changed. To cope with this Russian tank threat, the Germans were forced to upgrade their existing weapons systems. The G-type StuG III built from late 1942 onwards, used a more powerful, long barrel 75mm L/48 gun. The early G-type had a square shaped gun mantlet. The superstructure was redesigned and an MG42 machine gun with shield, commander`s vision cupola and smoke dischargers were added. The thin steel plates, known as Schurzen (skirts) were attached to the sides of the hull beginning in the spring of 1943. The type-42 assault gun mounted a 105mm howitzer on the StugG III chassis and was developed to fulfill the StuG III`s original role of infantry support. Incorporating several minor changes, about 7,800 G-type StuG III`s were produced.

About the German Panther Type G Late Version
Because of its many advanced and innovative features, the World War II German Panzerkampfwagen V, known as the "Panther" tank, is still considered by many ordnance experts as a weaponry masterpiece. The development of the Panther came about due to the successes generated by the Russian T-34, which has become a serious threat to the German forces during the mid part of the conflict. Mass production of the Panther began during the spring of 1943, and with its sophisticated mechanics and powerful Type 42 L70, 70mm main gun, the Panther tank demonstrated its formidable strength during front line action shortly after its introduction. Several improvements were suggested following its initial employment, resulting in the Panther Type G, which began to appear in spring 1944. Major improvements consisted of additional side armor slope angles and simplified assembly refinements for mass production. Early version model of the G type had a semi-cylindrical main gun mantlet which resulted in a shot-trap due to its shape. Shells were deflected downward through the hull or into the turret causing serious damage. This was improved on the late version model by adding a vertical lip on the lower end of the mantlet. A modified engine room deck with an improved air intake grille and ventilator housing are some of the other distinctive exterior features seen on the late version type G Panther.

Shuttle between the Earth and Space
It took billions of dollars to launch various artificial sattelites and spaceships. But all of these things were discarded after one-time use. This was too uneconomical and made it rather difficult to utilize space for human beings. The space shuttle is a new means of transportation devised to solve the problem and promote space development more economically. The shuttle means a bus, truck, train, etc. making frequent trips back and forth. The space shuttle, as the name implies, is a linear between the Earth and space and is often called "space ferry"...

About the Space Shuttle Orbiter
The space shuttle basically comprises an orbiter, external fuel tank (ET) and two solid fuel rocket boosters (SRB). The orbiter plays the most important role, while the external fuel tank and rocket boosters are means for sending the orbiter into space. When the space shuttle is launched, the external fuel tank carries one rocket booster on each side and the orbiter on its back. The orbiter detaches the external fuel tank and rocket boosters on the way and performs various duties in space. It comes back to the Earth and undergoes maintenance and repair. Then, it is launched again with an external fuel tank and rocket boosters. At the time of launching, the whole space shuttle is about 56 meters long and weighs about 2,000 tons. It takes off with a thrust nearly 3,000 tons by fully operating the two rocket boosters and the three main engines of the orbiter.

Particulars of Orbiter
The Orbiter, which is the most important constituent of the space shuttle, is a spaceship shaped like a stocky passenger plane with a delta wing. The overall length is 37 meters and the span is 23.7 meters. After reentry into the atmosphere, the orbiter can glide down and make a landing unlike conventional spaceships. After maintenance and repair, it can be launched again.

Most of the surface of the orbiter is covered with tiles made of silica of very high purity. These tiles are classified into two groups. One for high temperature and the other for low temperature, and these are used accordingly. Parts which become extremely hot such as the nose and the front edge of the wing are covered with heat resistant material of reinforced carbon. These heat resistant materials protect the orbiter from heat of friction which exceeds 1,400 degrees celcius in some parts at the time of launching or reentry into the atmosphere. Thus, they make it possible to use the orbiter no less than 50 or 100 times.

The fuselage of the orbiter is partitioned into the cockpit and crew compartment in front, payload compartment at the center for carrying cargo, and engine room at the rear. The crew are four to seven. In addition to two pilots and one mission controller who controls the flight plan, the orbiter can carry four scientists and payload controllers who load and unload cargo for operation and experiments in space. This is a characteristic feature of the orbiter not ever seen in conventional spaceships. Furthermore, the scientists need only a few weeks training before getting in the orbiter. No space suit is needed inside it and they can act in ordinary clothes.

The payload compartment is of a cylindrical shape 4.5 meters in diameter and has a cargo rack 18 meters long. Its top consists of large doors which open right and left from the center. Various things are put in this compartment. the maximum capacity is 29.25 tons.

From Exploration to Utilization of Space
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union succeeded in launching Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite in the world. And on January 31, 1958, the United States launched Explorer I. Thus human beings took the first step to the advance into space. Early in the 1960`s, manned space flights were repeated with the Russian Vostok and American Mercury spaceships as the start. In 1969, Project Apollo at last placed astronauts on the moon. Human beings tried to send space probes to other planets. To begin with, they were sent to Mars and Venus which are near to the Earth. The next targets included Mercury and Jupiter, and Saturn and Uranus which are very far from the Earth, and even the outside of the solar system. At the same time as such challenges to unknown space, a large number of meteorological sattellites and communication satellites were launched. And in the 1970`s, the Skylab Project of the United States and the Soyuz and Salyut spaceships of the Soviet Union let astronauts stay in space for a long time and make observations and experiments in the fields of astronomy, chemistry, biology, etc. While the challenges to space and explorations of it were continued, attempts were made to utilize space for human life and some of them have been already successful. To promote the utilization of space further, the Space Shuttle Project was started in 1972 by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)of the United States. Great hopes are entertained of the project which will open a new era of space.

NASA`s spacecrafts are currently used for human spaceflight missions. The Orbiter is commonly used as a means of transportation for astronauts and is also used for delivery of scientific equipment, satellites, and so on. The Space Shuttle is well-known around the world, and gets plenty of attention in Japan thanks to the exploits of Japanese Astronauts Mr. Mamoru Mori and Ms. Chiaki Mukai. Mr. Mori is a veteran of two space flights and trained and worked as a Payload Specialist. Ms. Mukai has also taken part in two space flights as a Payload Specialist, and is famous for being the first Japanese woman to go into space.

About the US Navy Battleship Missouri

The Iowa Class Battleships were the largest and final great battleships of the US Navy. They included the BB-61 Iowa, the BB-62 New Jersey, and the third ship, the famous BB-63 Battleship Missouri. These ships, which boasted an amazing 212,000hp allowing a 33knots max speed, were armed with massive 40.6cm main guns. The Iowa Class ships stretched 270.4m but were relatively thin, with only 33m max length, enabling these ships to pass through the Panama Canal. Being commissioned in June 1944, the USS Missouri took part in many operations during the Pacific War including bombardments on Japanese mainland and capital. On September 2, 1945, the treaty for the unconditional surrender of Japanese forces was signed onboard the deck of the historical USS Missouri. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 the USS Missouri was deployed again with the other Iowa Class Battleships for fire support. The USS Missouri was relegated to reserve duty in 1955, but became subject to complete renovation and modernization in 1986 when she was fitted with the latest in electronic weapon systems, cruise missiles and other improvements. In 1991, the USS Missouri was deployed to fight in the Gulf War. Finally, in 1993, after about a half-century of service, this historical Battleship was at last retired.

About the British King George Battleship
The ship was launched on Feb 21, 1939 and completed for service on Oct 1,1940 by which time World War 2 had already been fought for a year. After a trip to USA, she covered the Lofoten raid (March 1941) and Atlantic convoys before becoming flagship of the British Home Fleet in April 1941. In May 1941 she led the chase of the German Bismarck and saw action for the first time. Through 1941-42 King George V took part in numerous search and escort operations in the Atlantic and in May 1943 she went to the Mediterranean taking part in all the big naval operations covering the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy. After refitting in England she went East as flagship of the second in command of the British Pacific Fleet. In Task Force 57 (later 37) she was part of the big Anglo-American naval force in the Okinawa operations and operations against Japan. In 1946 she became flagship of the British Home Fleet once more, the war now over, and in 1947-49 she served as a training ship before paying off into the Reserve Fleet in 1950. She was scrapped in 1957 along with her sister ships Howe, Anson, and Duke of York. A furthersister ship Prince of Wales was sunk by Japanese forces in 1941.

During her service life King George V underwent minor changes of armament. In 1940 she had four unrating rocket projectors for use against aircraft, but these were soon removed. She later had pom pom armament doubled and many 20 mm Oerlikon guns replaced the 0.5 inch machine guns.

About the Team Lotus Type 78 1977 with Photo Etched Parts
Lotus has brought a number of innovations to F1 racing since they entered their firstrace in 1958. The introduction of ground effect cars, the result of their aerodynamics research, was one of the highlights. In 1977, Lotus introduced the Type 78 (base model for the Type 79) which had a slim monocoque chassis and wide side pontoons with under surfaces like inverted aircraft wings. Airfow beneath the side pontoons thus enabled the body to generate downforce for stronger traction and faster cornering speeds. Mario Andretti and Gunnar Nilsson drove the car in the 1977 season, and despite early season troubles, they went on to take 4 and 1 wins respectively to prove the car`s potential.
